Fort McMurray to host Alberta’s fittest firefighters
Jun 05, 2015
Following the success of a long-running in-house competition, Syncrude is gearing up to host the 2015 Scott FireFit Championships Northern Alberta Regional.
The two-day event takes place on June 6 and 7 in the MacDonald Island Park parking lot. The competition tests the skills, fitness and endurance of dozens of firefighters as they compete in a series of common emergency situation tasks. Considered the toughest two minutes in sports, FireFit is free to the public and begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“We’re excited to host the Northern Alberta Regional FireFit for the first time,” says Ron Foy, a Syncrude emergency responder and event co-organizer. “Competitors take this event very seriously and it’s an opportunity for the best in our region to take on the rest of Alberta.”
Local firefighters from several oil sands operators, including Syncrude, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will compete in individual and team relay events. Firefighters from across Alberta will also tackle the course with all competitors seeking a spot in the Canadian Nationals later this year.
“We’re expecting about 60 competitors,” says Ron. “We also still need volunteers to help the event go smoothly. Syncrude employees, summer students, contractors, family, friends - all support is appreciated.”
Syncrude’s team 504 Smoke are the defending national men’s industrial relay champions while Syncrude’s women’s team - the Smokettes - finished fourth in 2014.
Syncrude operates the Syncrude Project, a Joint Venture undertaking among Canadian Oil Sands Limited, Imperial Oil Resources, Mocal Energy Limited, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., Nexen Oil Sands Partnership, Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership and Suncor Energy Ventures Partnership.
