Nov 27, 2014

Syncrude kicked off the 2014 Syncrude Food Drive with a $75,000 donation and challenge to the community this morning.

Listen here for Mark Ward, Syncrude's CEO announce the donation on Country 93.3.

“We are proud to be a longstanding supporter of this event as it helps keep the shelves stocked at the Wood Buffalo Food Bank throughout the year,” said Syncrude CEO Mark Ward. “I want to salute our employees, their families and the other volunteers who give their time to this worthy cause in our community.”

Volunteers, including more than 150 Syncrude employees and their families, will collect food and cash donations during the drive, which runs through Sunday, November 30 at all Fort McMurray supermarkets and Wal-Mart. Syncrude’s $75,000 contribution kicked off the Corporate Challenge in partnership with Country 93.3 FM and Rock 97.9 FM. The one-day fundraiser encourages pledges and challenges from businesses, clubs, service groups and individuals.

Syncrude has supported the event since 2005, contributing a total of $565,000. The Syncrude Food Drive generates more than 40 per cent of the food bank’s annual funding.

“The leadership and dedication that Syncrude displays with its support of our food drive is second to none. Not only does it pledge money annually, Syncrude also provides us with the much-needed support of volunteers,” said Arianna Johnson, executive director of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. “This kind of generosity and commitment helps us to not just feed but nourish the 4,000 or so men, women and children that we provide services to annually.”

H. Wilson Industries pick-up trucks will be stationed outside all local grocery stores and Wal-Mart on Friday from 11 a.m.to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The goal is to fill the trucks with food and monetary donations for the local food bank. Country 93.3 and Rock 97.9 will broadcast live from various locations throughout the drive. This year’s goal is to raise enough food to provide more than 62,500 meals to those in need.
