Fort McMurray votes for the Hub to receive $10,000 Syncrude donation

Apr 30, 2019

Thousands of Fort McMurray residents left last weekend’s Spring Show & Market not only with new products and accessories, but the feeling they helped out a worthy cause. Syncrude was proud to promote three local non-profit organizations as well as give attendees the chance for vote for which should receive a $10,000 donation.

More than 3,300 votes were cast in what was an extremely close race at MacDonald Island. In the end, the Hub Family Resource Centre came out as the top vote recipient. Pastew Place Detox Centre will receive a $5,000 donation for finishing with the second highest number of votes, while Syncrude will also donate $2,500 to the Wood Buffalo Youth Science Foundation for finishing third.

“Being part of Syncrude’s Good Neighbours campaign and the tradeshow booth was a great opportunity for The Hub. Syncrude is a fantastic community partner,” says Samantha Simpson, Executive Director with The Hub. “We are extremely grateful to Syncrude and the Wood Buffalo community for this opportunity.”

All three non-profit groups had representatives on-hand throughout the weekend to answer questions from the community, and provide literacy about their program offerings.

“It was great to attend the tradeshow and talk to people about our organization, and connect with community members. The support from the community throughout the weekend was overwhelming,” adds Samantha. “We had many families who utilize our programs and services stop by to vote for us and share posts on social media. It is really exciting to know that the community recognizes the importance of our agency.”

One of the ways Syncrude invests in our community is through the Good Neighbours Program, which recognizes employees who volunteer their time and talents. Syncrude supports their contributions with volunteer grants to help organizations and projects that play a vital role in the community. Employees volunteer at all three organizations represented at the weekend Trade Show because of the positive impact they’re making.

Good Neighbours is part of Syncrude’s broader Community Investment Program, which donated more than $6 million in 2018. Over the past five years, Syncrude is proud to have supported local organizations, projects and initiatives with more than $30 million in donations.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Syncrude tradeshow booth to vote and help make a difference in our community.
