Volunteer experience freshens perspectives and walls of local resource centre

Syncrude employee volunteers recently rolled up their sleeves to help the Pastew Place Detox Centre by washing down walls and cleaning floors as part of the United Way Day of Caring program.
Volunteers gave their time on April 14, making a positive impact at the centre while also learning how United Way agencies better the community.
“This was my first time doing something like this and I wasn’t sure what to expect,” says Hetal Patel, Mechanical Engineer, Strategic Team. "However, when I arrived there and heard Pastew Place’s representative speak about how clients got into addiction and what they do for them – it really took me by surprise. It was very impactful to learn about the long-term care they provide clients even after they are living on their own, and how successfully treated clients often come back to volunteer and mentor new admissions.”
As the only detox centre in Fort McMurray, Pastew Place provides free information and education programs. The centre is an important resource in the community that helps people detox from alcohol and other drugs in a safe, controlled setting through individualized treatment and therapy.
“This experience shifted my perspective which I shared with my family and friends in hopes to also help them see things differently,” she says. “It’s all about educating and changing mindsets. I’m glad I was able to do that for myself thanks to my United Way volunteering experience. Seeing how much care Pastew Place gives to its clients is truly amazing."
