Syncrude hosts Mildred Lake Extension Project Fort McMurray Open House
Oct 19, 2016
Syncrude is hosting a series of open houses to inform and engage members of the public on the proposed Mildred Lake Extension Project (MLX). A Fort McMurray session open to the public, will be held on Wednesday, October 19, from 4 to 7p.m. at Shell Place on MacDonald Island. (Ballroom D).
All members of the community are invited to stop by and learn more about the project and Syncrude employees will be on hand to answer questions.
To further engage Aboriginal community members, a variety of open houses are also scheduled throughout the region.
MLX consists of two new mining areas– MLX West located northwest of the North Mine and west of the MacKay River; and MLX East, located between the Mildred Lake Settling Basin and the Athabasca River. These mining sites will replace the oil sands ore body currently being mined in the adjacent North Mine once that mine site is depleted on or around the year 2023.
As a result, the MLX project is a continuation of Syncrude’s existing North Mine site and no new Extraction or Upgrading facilities are part of this project. The primary construction involved is a bridge across the MacKay River to allow heavy haulers to haul the resource to Syncrude’s existing facilities.
The MLX Project is currently in the application review stage with the Alberta Energy Regulator.
