Stakeholder Relations and Communications Policy
Corporate sustainability can only be achieved, now and in the future, by ensuring Syncrude retains the confidence of our stakeholders and communities of interest.
Syncrude actively seeks to establish long-term relationships through effective engagement, consultation, collaboration and open communication. We manage these processes by complying with all applicable laws and legislation, and with respect for human rights. Our interactions are based on honesty, transparency and integrity.
We foster an environment in which we actively seek ideas, input and feedback in order to cultivate mutual trust and cooperation. We participate in collaborative processes to promote sustainable and responsible development. In addition, stakeholders are encouraged to define the manner in which they wish to be engaged or consulted.
Those acting on behalf of Syncrude are receptive to input and, where appropriate, act on it, even if it necessitates changing our plans. When disagreements occur and remain unresolved, we always demonstrate respect for the views presented.
We engage at a professional level and are responsive to the needs of our stakeholders and communities of interest by providing information and insight as appropriate. When necessary, we will also take a proactive approach to our relationships to ensure essential information is shared in a suitable manner and mutual understanding is fostered and promoted.
Syncrude is committed to productive and mutually beneficial relationships with local First Nations and Métis communities. Our operations are located on the traditional lands of five First Nations and we will respect established treaty rights, as protected under the Canadian Constitution and through federal laws. We will recognize the unique cultural perspectives of Aboriginal people and ensure their capacity to consult, while sharing the opportunities generated by our activities.
Employees are key stakeholders who are accountable for respecting and upholding Syncrude’s Vision and Values. As such, Syncrude will fully communicate business-related information that provides employees with an understanding of corporate goals, plans, performance and perspectives. This commitment will enable them to function effectively in their roles and make well-considered, responsible decisions each day.
Syncrude will encourage and sustain the growth and well-being of the communities in which we do business, where our employees live and where our operations have an impact. As such, Syncrude will contribute to projects that enhance the quality of life in, primarily, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and northeastern Alberta. Syncrude believes the projects must benefit and add sustainability to these communities through investment in the key areas of Education, Aboriginal Relations, Community Well-Being, and Safety, Health and the Environment.
We believe in relationships built on a foundation of dialogue and trust. Syncrude has had a presence in the Wood Buffalo region for over 30 years and we strive to be a good neighbour. From the very beginning, we have worked to build an environment of trust with local communities through a dedicated and comprehensive regional consultation strategy with the following principles:
- Syncrude has the responsibility to seek out and facilitate the involvement of those potentially affected.
- Public participants must be involved in designing consultation processes and, as far as possible, the process should meet the needs of all participants.
- The roles and responsibilities of participants in any consultation process must be clear and understood.
- Information relevant to participants’ understanding and evaluation of a decision will be fully disclosed to allow meaningful participation.
- Contributions to the consultation process will be fully considered in subsequent decision-making and feedback will be supplied to participants on how their input was utilized.
