Syncrude donates $65,000 to food bank drive

11/28/2012

Syncrude kicked off the Wood Buffalo Food Bank’s annual drive with a $65,000 donation and a challenge to the community.

“Many volunteers are giving their time to support the Wood Buffalo Food Bank this weekend. I want to thank them for their community spirit and I’m asking others to get involved, too,” said Syncrude President and CEO Scott Sullivan.

Community volunteers, including more than 80 Syncrude employees will collect food during the annual drive, which started today and runs through Sunday, December 2 at the city’s supermarkets and Wal-Mart.

Syncrude has supported the annual drive since 2005 and has contributed a total of $425,000 during the past seven years, including this year’s donation.

“Working with local industry and the community to raise food and funds to feed those who are in need is the first step to ensuring our citizens and our children never have to make the choice between a roof and food,” said Arianna Johnson, executive director of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. “Everyone at the food bank from clients to staff to board members to volunteers would like to thank Syncrude for their ongoing support and willingness to set the bar high in the areas of community leadership and community spirit.”

H. Wilson Industries pick-up trucks will be stationed outside all local grocery stores and Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The goal is to fill the trucks with food and monetary donations for the local food bank. Country 93.3 and Rock 97.9 will broadcasting live from various locations throughout the drive. This year’s goal is to raise enough food to feed more than 800 families.
