Electrical Engineering students are required in several areas within Syncrude. Work involved may be of a design nature or related to day-to-day electrical support to the operation.

Day-to-Day Electrical Support

  • Preparation of electrical scope of work and bill of materials for conceptual and basic engineering packages.
  • Preparation of detailed engineering packages to be issued for construction (CADD, As-Built, Tdocs drawings).
  • Preparation of material requisition technical content to be issued for bidding and purchase of material.
  • Preparation of new and revision of existing electrical drawings using CAD Intergraph/Microstation system.
  • Verify, collect data and field check equipment technical information with the assistance of plant electricians.
  • Evaluation of motor control and protection.
  • Evaluation of relay coordination and system protection schemes.
  • Investigating electrical equipment failures, malfunctions, and reliability problems relating to electrical power, protection, utilization and control equipment.
  • Making recommendations and developing work procedures to carry out repairs and improvements safely and efficiently.

Design Opportunities

  • Working as part of a project team in carrying out design work for safety or efficiency improvements.
  • Designing packages for the installation of electrical heat tracing including scope of work and bill of materials.
  • Performing necessary engineering for the purchase of electric motors and associated protective relays.
  • Investigating the current carrying capability of feeder cables using computer aided tools; making recommendations regarding the necessity of replacement.
  • Learn and utilize Intergraph CADD workstation to create and update drawings and data sheets.
