Syncrude 21 represents Syncrude in the 21st century. Syncrude completed phase 3 of the Syncrude 21 expansion program in 2006, bringing its production capacity to 350,000 barrels/day, which represents 13% of Canada's energy needs.

Yet Syncrude 21 is not just about increasing production. It's also about improving environmental, health and safety performance; introducing new and innovative technologies; and offering our employees and contractors rewarding opportunities for many years to come.

Environmental Improvements

One in every four dollars invested, or more than $2 billion in total, will be spent on technologies that will improve Syncrude's energy efficiency and environmental performance. In fact, sulphur dioxide(SO₂) emissions will decline by 60% from today's levels and energy consumption per unit of production will drop by 1% annually. This is despite a more than twofold increase in production.

Job Creation

The Syncrude 21 suite of investments will generate 23,000 person years of direct construction employment, 500 highly skilled permanent operating jobs for the expanded operation, and a total of 100,000 person years of direct and indirect employment.
