Research and Development
Our research and development scientists, engineers and technologists continue to push the limits in oil sands development. This dedicated team has been pioneering innovative technologies and creative solutions since before Syncrude ever produced its first barrel of oil in 1978.
Driven by the vision to lead and knowledge to succeed, Syncrude R&D develops innovations and technology that not only increase production, but also enhance environmental performance, improve reliability and safety, and reduce costs. Many of these innovations have been patented. In fact, Syncrude scientists have been awarded over 140 Canadian and U.S. patents. Environmental research has always been publicly disclosed to allow the entire industry to benefit. As well, Syncrude is an active participant in Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) which is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating the pace of improvement in environmental performance through collaborative action and innovation.
