Syncrude doubles donation to food bank
Dec 01, 2016
(FORT McMURRAY, AB – December 1, 2016) Syncrude kicked off the Wood Buffalo Food Bank’s Corporate Challenge with a record-breaking donation of $200,000.
“Our region has shown its resiliency in coming together during the wildfire and the continued recovery,” said Syncrude President and CEO Mark Ward. “Wood Buffalo Food Bank is an agency that’s really supported our community during that time and continues to play a vital role. By more than doubling our corporate donation for this year’s Corporate Challenge, we hope to help the Food Bank meet the increased demand on its essential service to our community.”
A one-day fundraiser, the Corporate Challenge encourages pledges and challenges from businesses, clubs, service groups and individuals. This event, in partnership with Country 93.3 FM and Rock 97.9 FM, is the lead-in event for the 24th annual Syncrude Food Bank Drive running December 2 to 4.
The food drive would not be possible without the generous support of volunteers. Each year, volunteers including more than 150 Syncrude employees and their families collect food and cash donations at grocery stores and other retailers across the region. The food drive helps provide immediate food needs for residents while working towards long-term solutions to hunger and poverty.
“We’re grateful for the support we receive each year from Syncrude,” said Arianna Johnson, Executive Director of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. “With Syncrude’s dedication to our organization, we can ensure families are getting the help they need during this winter season.”
The Wood Buffalo Food Bank is looking to raise $425,000 and more than 75,000 pounds of food in this year’s drive.
The Syncrude Project is a joint venture undertaking among Imperial Oil Resources; Mocal Energy Limited; Nexen Oil Sands Partnership; Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership; and Suncor Energy Inc. (held as Canadian Oil Sands Partnership #1 and Suncor Energy Ventures Partnership, both wholly owned affiliates of Suncor Energy Inc.).
