Let's Do This - Emergency Services

Feb 12, 2018

What does it take...to always be ready?

For Syncrude’s 56 full-time emergency responders, it’s about preparation and teamwork. Each member of the Emergency Services team spends about 120 hours a year in skills maintenance training. Many more hours are focused on improving technical expertise. In addition to fire and paramedic training, emergency responders are skilled in complex exercises such as high-angle, confined space and water/ice rescue.

Syncrude’s Emergency Services unit is also much more than just fire trucks. It responds to an average of 2,500 calls a year, ranging from operational upsets to medical emergencies to wildlife calls to the unprecedented Fort McMurray wildfire response in 2016.

“We are a source of comfort for the people of Syncrude and the community," says Ira Marshall, Emergency Services Coordinator. “People have seen what we do and know what we are capable of. We can handle pretty much anything.”

Syncrude is also a Mutual Aid partner, an alliance with Suncor, Albian Sands Energy and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, providing emergency aid to other sites, highway incidents and off-site medical calls.

With their team spirit and resolve, groups like the Emergency Services keep Syncrude moving forward.

Together, our 4,700 employees have what it takes for us to succeed.
