Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) Agreement

The Fort McKay North Wind Dancers perform at the ATC Regional Gathering in July.

Syncrude is providing ongoing leadership to assist the ATC All Parties Core Agreement deliver on its stated goals. The agreement is designed to assist all signatories—comprising the five First Nations of the Wood Buffalo region, three levels of government, and 17 industry members—in maximizing the benefits of industrial development and mitigating any negative impacts. Among the agreement’s recent successes:

  • The ATC Regional Gathering, where the region’s five First Nations came together in Fort McKay to share and showcase their culture and traditions. This cultural event was open to everyone and was very well attended; it focused on preserving heritage and keeping traditions alive. Syncrude was proud to have contributed financial resources towards this special event.
  • Completion of labour market and labour pool analyses, which are part of an ongoing effort to advance First Nations employment. It is a demographic assessment of the First Nations labour pool that identifies its strengths and also the barriers that must be overcome for Aboriginal people to fully participate in the permanent sustainable employment opportunities being created in the region.
